Some brief comments (hey, I know this is probably for your DS, but I like to contribute where I can):

1) Re: squickiness. I'm always fascinated by this phenomenon, called the uncanny valley in robotics theory.

2) Although you might be right about the body being a cultural universal (i.e., we all have bodies), it might be interesting to ask how a DFI would be locally customized. In cultures where people of unequal rank aren't supposed to make eye contact, for example, would the DFI have to be programmed to "look down" when you speak to it? Would displays of "emotion" in the DFI be universally welcome? Hmm.

In reference to the anonymity aspect of writing online, it often seems that the internet is an effective teaching tool for quite the opposite reason. This is especially true with web-logs that one is encouraged to develop for extended classroom interaction. Seemingly, the student, named at this particular junction, feels the impetus to post more because of a certain ambiguity as to the professor's presence. Here, the student is encouraged in quite a positive manner, I think. It is not that the student is encouraged by discomfort, but rather, that the student feels the necessity to post more. It encourages a certain very positive drive. It seems that the digital operates very effectively in relationship to this ambiguity. This ambiguity is what differentiates it from the very physical realm of classroom interaction, where the professor can be seen, heard, avoided, fooled. Online, the professor becomes mysterious, and untrackable (except for comments). I encourage the mystery.

And not even just incest porn, but Internet, time-travelling, dimension-hopping incest porn.

As everyone knows, that's the worst kind.
